2008 has been referred to as Scott Montgomery’s “breakout year” as a poker player, and with good reason. He’s amassed over $1.3 million in tournament earnings this year alone, and the biggest opportunity is yet to come. Scott played his way to the final table of the 2008 WSOP Main Event and is a member of the famed November 9. He’ll have the opportunity to play for more than $9 million and win the most coveted title in poker – Main Event champion.

Scott first began playing poker just four years ago, while he was an English teacher in Japan. When he wasn’t standing at the front of the classroom, Scott was busy playing and studying every poker book that he could get his hands on. Clearly, this approach paid off.

His great run in 2008 began during February at the WPT’s L.A. Poker Classic $9.9K No-Limit Hold ‘em championship event. Scott made the final table, facing off against eventual winner Phil Ivey before finishing in 5th place and earning over $296K. His next big performances would come just a few months later at the WSOP.

Prior to the Main Event, Scott ran deep and cashed in three No-Limit Hold ‘em events at the 2008 WSOP, including a 16th place finish in the $10K Heads-Up World Championship. In these three events alone, Scott earned an impressive $73K. However, his strongest showing to date was still to come. Of the 6,844 entrants who started the Main Event, Scott worked his way to the final table, securing his spot amongst the November Nine. While he’s already earned at least $900K for this alone, he’ll be gunning for the bracelet and over $9 million in November. As for the big event and the days leading up to it, Scott’s got a plan:

"I'm going to win; I planned on winning from day one. I plan on playing all the tournaments I can between now and then. I don't know how much research you can really do, if I can get some pre-information I wouldn't turn it down. If I take a vacation, I will go to Monte Carlo and play some poker."

Since working his way to the final table wasn’t enough for Scott, he headed over to the Bellagio between days one and two of the Main Event to play in the $3K No-Limit Hold ‘em tournament in the Bellagio Cup IV. True to form, he took fourth place and returned to make the final table of the Main Event with an additional $34K in his pocket.

If Scott’s record so far this year is anything to go by, he’s definitely a contender for the Main Event bracelet. He’ll start the final table in 3rd place with 19.7 million in chips in the 4th seat. If you want to see Scott in action, look for him online at Full Tilt Poker.
